„FAUST“
Opera by Charles Gounod
Theatre and Music Production Centre – Varnaа
6 July (Sunday) 2025

On 6 July 2025, at the Tsarevets Fortress Palace, the Theatre and Music Production Centre – Varna will present “Faust” by Charles Gounod.
Gounod’s work is one of the most popular operas created in the second half of the 19th century. Librettists Jules Barbier and Michel Carré adapted Goethe’s poem, which inspired many composers, yet it became a true musical masterpiece in Gounod’s version.

The story of Faust tempted by the Devil, granted youth, and given the love of Marguerite is interpreted by director Vera Nemirova through her distinctive contemporary lens. She compares Goethe’s Faust to each one of us: “Faust is the seeker; there is a Faust within each of us, searching for the meaning of life.”

The stage director of the production is Olga von Wahl. The principal conductor is Maestro Svetoslav Borisov.
The production once again collaborates with Yuliyan Tabakov, author of the costumes, while the set design marks the third staging of this title in the history of the Varna Opera, following Faust conducted by Yosko Yosifov and directed by Mikhail Hadjimishev (1955), and Faust conducted by Vladi Anastasov and directed by Kuzman Popov (1974).
