The accompanying programme of the Summer Opera Festival “Stage of the Ages” at the Summer Theatre in Veliko Tarnovo opened on 2 July with the musical “Zorro.”
The production, featuring music by the Gipsy Kings and John Cameron, is presented by the State Opera Ruse.
In the Bulgarian version of the musical, the role of the charismatic Zorro is performed by Vladimir Zombori, who makes his debut in this genre. Young Diego de la Vega takes his fate into his own hands and becomes a legend. From the romantic figure with the black mask to the mark he leaves with his sword, he is a symbol of justice, rebellion against evil, and protection of the wronged. The mysterious hero with the black mask defends the innocent and faces danger with the dance of the sword and the rhythm of flamenco.
Some of the most famous songs by the Gipsy Kings such as “Bamboleo,” “Baila Me,” and “Djobi, Djoba” are woven into the story of Zorro.
More than 200 years ago, on the shores of California, the legend of Zorro was born. Since then, the hero has come to life in dozens of books, films, and stage adaptations each adding a new stroke to his myth. Legendary actors such as Douglas Fairbanks, Alain Delon, and Antonio Banderas have taken on the role with style and charisma, proving that Zorro never ages he is reborn. With every generation, he returns stronger, faster, more inspiring. Because the world always needs its hero.
“Zorro” is not just a musical it is a fiery adventure that makes us believe that heroes exist… and that justice always finds its way.
The world premiere of the show took place in 2008 in London, followed by performances in Paris, Tel Aviv, Moscow, Rio de Janeiro, Amsterdam, and more. In 2009, the musical received five Laurence Olivier Award nominations, including Best New Musical and Best Choreography.
