„SWAN LAKE“
ballet by Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky
State Opera Stara Zagora
July 25 (Saturday) 2026
Tsarevets fortress

Classics and modern audacity will be offered by the ballet production “Swan Lake” of the Stara Zagora Opera, which will be presented on July 25 on the open stage in the Tsarevets fortress. Under the direction of Silvia Tomova, the most recognizable title in ballet art will offer a completely new and magnetic charge.
The performance unfolds the full scale of the theater’s young, multinational ballet troupe, in which artists from over ten countries dance. The choreographic edition preserves the spirit of the classics, but also shines with the bright handwriting of the Bulgarian ballet school. The great visual triumph is the work of the artist Denis Ivanov, whose fabulous costumes and impressive decor transport the audience between the royal court and the enchanted shore.
A bold and original highlight in the production is the participation of the Proto-Bulgarian Survival School “Baga-Tur”. With their powerful energy and specific plasticity, their fighters take on the roles of the dark forces led by the evil magician Rothbart. This unexpected synthesis between classical ballet and Proto-Bulgarian combat dynamics turns the performance into a unique title without analogues in our country.
“Swan Lake” by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is the most famous and beloved classical ballet in history, a symbol of perfection in this art. Composed in 1875–1876, it tells the mystical and touching story of Prince Siegfried and Princess Odette, enchanted as a swan – an eternal plot about the struggle between true love and dark forces. The dual role of the white and black swan (Odette and Odile) is among the most complex challenges for any prima ballerina, and the ingenious music turns the ballet into a global cultural phenomenon.
